Absolute beginner, with an absolute beginner question...

Hey there, I just recently got ahold of a Knifty Knitter-type circular loom, and I'd like to get started on making, well.. anything - but I can't even figure out how to arrange the yarn so that there are two strands. It seems like it should be really simple but I honestly have no concept of how this would work. Am I supposed to have two full skeins/balls of yarn to work with, or is it possible to do this with just one? I tried already by just guessing at a length of yarn that would work for making a flat panel, but it ended up that I ran out of one strand, so there was only one left to wrap around the loom. Any clarification you can give me would be really amazing. Thank you! :)
